Inspiration Point – Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Inspiration Point, one of many spectacular overlooks accessible from the North Rim Trail in the magnificent Yellowstone National Park, is a promontory cliff on the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone just east of Yellowstone Falls - the point provides a natural observation platform over the canyon, offering expansive views of the Yellowstone River, Lower Falls, and the canyon’s colorful walls.

There are two ways to take in the panorama from Inspiration Point, you can hike to the overlook via the North Rim Trail (mileage varies) or drive to a nearby parking area - the hike from the parking lot is less than 0.1 miles round trip with about 50 feet of elevation change, making it suitable for most visitors, including children. The trail is well-maintained, with stairs leading down to the observation platform - for a more immersive experience, hikers can continue along the North Rim Trail to other viewpoints like West Overlook, Grand View Point, Lookout Point, and Crystal Falls.

Beginning at the parking area on Inspiration Point Road, just above the overlook you will see a sign with distances for the North Rim Trail 140ft, West Overlook 308ft, Mid Overlook 418ft, and the Lower Overlook 70 stairs - from the top of the stairs the North Rim Trail parts with the road and crosses a forest of lodgepole pines and a paved path leads to the canyon’s edge. Continue along the paved path, descending the stairs to the viewing platform - the views are beautiful and daunting, a tell-tale V-shaped canyon with bright orange, yellow, and pink walls tower above a river of many moods. Clear skies impart a swift dark blue water capped by whitewater rapids, while overcast rainy days turn the river a muddy brown. .

As you ascend the stairs, look for a path off to the left that leads to West Overlook and then eventually connects with the North Rim Trail, which you can take back to the parking area.

Views abound along this section of the loop - from the north rim, it is a mere 3/4 of a mile across the chasm to the south rim and vantage points along the trail provide hikers with sweeping vistas of the canyon, which stretches 24 miles across the landscape with depths ranging from 800–1,200 feet.

The V-shaped canyon walls, formed by Ice Age glaciers and geological activity, display vibrant hues of orange, yellow, and red - from the fenced observation areas, you can look both upstream and downstream along the Yellowstone River, capturing dramatic landscapes that include the rapids below.
