Gorge/Rim Trail

Cantwell Cliffs State Park, Ohio

Cantwell Cliffs is another of the spectacular areas in the Hocking Hills—a Rim Trail and a Gorge Trail give the hiker access to this remote region. A shelter at the trailhead shows a map of the areas hiking trails, outlining the Rim Trail in red and the Gorge Trail in yellow—trees are blazed with these colors throughout the hike. The Rim Trail is a mile long and the Gorge Trail is 2 miles long, and both can be completed in about an hour. Spectacular views of the sandstone cliffs, the deep valley, slump blocks, a recess cave, and fascinating concretions can all be seen from the Rim and Gorge Trails, but the highlight of the trail system is an area called the “Fat Woman’s Squeeze”. The squeeze is, as you might have guessed, a narrow opening between the rocks that the hiker must navigate through—bring your camera for great shots of your friends maneuvering this one!
