Buffalo Point Trail

Antelope Island State Park, Utah

The Buffalo Point Trail, located on Antelope Island State Park, climbs 300 feet in 0.4 miles from the Buffalo Point Overlook/Parking Area to the top of a prominent rock outcropping. Once you reach this high vantage point, you are greeted with a panoramic view of the northern point of Antelope Island—the largest island in the Great Salt Lake. Antelope Island is home to free-roaming buffalo, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, coyotes, bobcats, and mule deer—chances are good that you will see at least one of these amazing animals during your hike. In addition to the mammals that call the island home, you will be treated to views of the many waterfowl and birds that use the waterway/island as a migratory and nesting stop. The climb to the top of Buffalo Point is rated as easy to moderate, and we stress the moderate rating, especially if you climb during the hotter seasons. There are three benches along the rocky trail, which allow hikers to stop and take in the scenery—incredible views of the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains are among the highlights. Geology fanatics will also enjoy the bird’s eye view of the tufa deposits—deposited by Lake Bonneville some 15,000 years ago.
